    Book details

The longer we gaze at the paintings of the old masters, the more we appreciate the subtlety and artistry of the painters who created them. This beautiful book offers readers an opportunity to learn and study the art of Jan van Eyck, Rogier van der Weyden, Hieronymus Bosch, Pieter Bruegel the Elder, and many other masters of this period and region. It also explores their influence on later artists from the Baroque period. Each of the works is briefly presented along with its historical and contextual background and importance. Then in a series of full-page illustrations, specific details are enlarged to guide the reader carefully and thoughtfully through the piece's nuances and often overlooked features. The result is the next best thing to a private viewing at a museum - a truly sensuous and emotional experience that will engage both the novice and the expert. Till-Holger Borchert's texts are informative and engaging as he shares his singular passion for these great works in a magnificent book that will inspire viewers to form their own opinions and exercise their own powers of observation within the context of this important period in art history

For lovers of this period, the gloriously enlarged close-up illustrations and expanded spreads make this an unrivalled account. --Financial Times 'Books of the Year', 29th November 2014This magnificent book is magic between covers. --Irish Times 'Books of the Year', 29th November 2014To take photographs of this calibre without a flash is awe-inspiring and Hugo Maertens, in collaboration with the art galleries, will get the readers' total respect and thanks. --Yorkshire Gazette Herald, 14th January 2015

This book is huge! It is not for bed reading. We have a large activity room, where it is located, and open on different pages over time. If you have the space, it's a great book where you can get close to it. Just think to see the hair on Adam's legs in Ghent altarpiece, or details on the Bridge in Rolin Madonna both by Van Eyck. Or study the faces of Diderick Bout's paintings. Not even on the internet you get so close. I get an experience from this book, if not every day, at least almost every day.The Nordic Renaissance is among others the art of details - here you see them as they should be seen when you can not have the actual picture before you.

This is worth saving your pennies for! I have been to St Bavos many times to see Van Eyck's masterpiece, but this book made me realise that I'd never really seen its full glory. Even if this period is not your favourite, this book will make it one of your favourites. The plates are an extraordinary visual feast. Be warned: it's big, and you'll need a good book rest (or an improvised one made of pillows!) and good light. But I promise you, you will be lost for many hours within the beauty and the pleasure that these detailed plates afford. This is one of those 'lifetime' book purchases that you will come back to over and over again. I very much wish the publishers would think about doing this for various other periods that would reward this kind of detailed study. But I am eternally grateful for this one. My best book purchase in many, many years.

A fabulous book. The quality of the illustrations and the scholarship of the analysis could not be faulted. I agree with the other reviewer that the reader must sit at the table to get the best out of it, preferably with an appropriate light available. However, this makes the experience even more like being in the gallery and looking at the paintings, many of which I have seen in original form in Bruges and Amsterdam. The book is not a replacement for these experiences, but not far off.
