    Book details

At twenty-one, just as she was starting to comprehend the puzzles of adulthood, Sarah Manguso was faced with another: a wildly unpredictable autoimmune disease that appeared suddenly and tore through her twenties, paralysing her for weeks at a time, programming her first to expect nothing from life and then, furiously, to expect everything. In this captivating story, Manguso recalls her struggle: arduous blood cleansings, collapsed veins, multiple chest catheters, depression, the deaths of friends and strangers, addiction, and, worst of all for a writer, the trite metaphors that accompany prolonged illness. A book of tremendous grace and humour, The Two Kinds of Decay transcends the very notion of what an illness story can and should be.

'Beautifully crafted memoir ... a remarkable book, which stridently reminds the reader not to wish one's mundane, routine life away' --Sunday Times'Manguso's honest, insightful and stark memory album of a life on the edge of death is an unusually piercing one' --Independent on Sunday'A compassionate and emotionally incisive work, and its ultimate message is one of moving forward'--Metro'A remarkable book, which stridently reminds the reader not to wish one's mundane, routine life away'--Sunday Times'This is a compassionate and emotionally incisive work, and its ultimate message is one of moving forward' --Metro'This honest, insightful and stark memory album of a life on the edge of death is unusually piercing' --Independent on Sunday'A startlingly original read' --Marie Claire`A compelling and utterly, idiosyncratic read ... The chapters themselves sometimes take the reader's breath away' --Irish Times

As I have a similar condition, I was very interested in the author's problem. She wrote very clearly and often amusingly. I felt a lot of sympathy for her and am pleased she's finally been correctly diagnosed. She has certainly had an excruciating ordeal. Very highly recommended.

The best account I have ever read about being ill. Disturbing and brilliant, the language is taught, beautiful and always serves the purpose of the narrative, which is an attempt to lay bare what it is like to be diagnosed with a horrible disease. Inspired.

I bought this book because it had been short listed for the Wellcome Trust book prize and was described in terms such as 'remarkable', 'piercing', 'elegant simplicity'.I read it in one afternoon, not because it was so gripping I couldn't put it down, but mainly because it was easy to read with short chapters and I had the time.Good bits: quite interesting tale of a challenging illness and it's treatment. A quick read.Less good bits: the short statementy paragraphs which were usually one sentence long, I find them bitty and pretentious. It lacked depth and reflection. It didn't live up to the hype on the cover.
